Listen to Frank Ray; Columbus, New Mexico raising artist!!

The Columbus Chamber of Commerce wants to extend a congratulation note to our very own Frank Ray from Columbus, New Mexico!!. Frank Ray, a former police officer with the Las Cruces, New Mexico, force, left his full-time police job a few months ago and his country singing career has been accelerating rapidly since then. An experienced performer who had the chance to open shows for A Thousand Horses and Keith Urban with his previous band, Ray's solo debut EP Different Kind of Country was released earlier in 2017. The EP's forlorn lead single "Every Time You Run" (filmed entirely in Columbus locations) is currently...

Gov. Martinez orders Guard to border

Eighty soldiers from the New Mexico National Guard are headed to the border following President Donald Trump’s call for a greater military presence along the country’s southern frontier. Aides to Gov. Susana Martinez said Monday the troops, due to report for duty this week, will serve in a support role for the U.S. Border Patrol and that 250 soldiers are eventually expected to serve in the operation. It will hardly be the first time troops have moved into the borderland. But with the details and scope of the mission still scarce, critics argued the latest operation amounts to a wasteful political stunt...

Columbus NM seeks funds for community center, drainage projects

The second council meeting of Mayor Esequiel Salas's administration went more smoothly than the first. Village trustees moved forward on pursuing a Community Development Block Grant through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development by selecting a priority project for the grant application. Trustees unanimously selected phase 2 of renovations...

Columbus Monument’s Fate is Uncertain

As the $85 million expansion of the Port of Entry proceeds, the chain link fence marking the construction zone has temporarily cordoned off a monument erected by the border community in December of 2000. The monument, consisting of a wooden cross standing on a rammed-earth base, sits on a small triangle of land that is partly under the control of the General Services Administration and partly under private ownership. It is located near a small parking lot approximately 300 yards from the border crossing into Puerto Palomas. On December 2, 2000, a procession of Columbus residents marched from the Holy Family Catholic...
